East Tennessee Region’s Only Magnet Hospital

The American Nurse Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program® is the most prestigious distinction a health care organization can receive for nursing excellence and quality patient outcomes. Organizations that achieve Magnet recognition are part of an esteemed group that demonstrates superior nursing practice and outcomes. Visit here for more information.

The Magnet Recognition Program® provides a roadmap to nursing excellence, which benefits the whole organization. To nurses, Magnet recognition means education and development through every career stage, which leads to greater autonomy at the bedside. To patients, it means the very best care, delivered by nurses who are supported to be the very best that they can be.

Some benefits of Magnet according to ANCC:

  • Highest standard of care for patients
  • Business growth and financial success
  • Team members who feel motivated and valued

While the benefits of Magnet speak for themselves, the journey to and redesignation of Magnet requires real dedication. By continually evaluating strengths, weaknesses, and performance in relation to the Magnet model, our organization is empowered to make the right changes. The result is an environment which inspires nurses to work together, to advance health care for all. The University of Tennessee Medical Center is one of four hospitals/systems in Tennessee with Magnet designation. There are almost 6,000 hospitals in the U.S., but only around 8% of them have earned this special recognition.

Third Magnet Designation – 2021

The University of Tennessee Medical Center received notification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program® that we have achieved Magnet recognition for the third time. Our nurses have shown immense dedication to their patients — at times standing in for loved ones — and their profession by delivering safe, high-quality and compassionate care. We are incredibly proud of all our nurses, who have resolutely served the East Tennessee community, honored their profession with excellence and supported one another with courage.

Second Magnet Designation – 2016

“It is such an honor to receive and maintain this designation” said Janell Cecil, senior vice president and chief nursing officer. “Our nurses, physicians and other clinicians at the medical center work tirelessly to continuously improve our care processes on behalf of the patients. Achieving Magnet status demonstrates to all our patients, their families and the community, the expertise and compassion given by our talented and dedicated nursing staff and other clinicians. We are honored to achieve this designation.”
