Personal Interests:
Dr. Keith Gray, Chief, Division of Surgical Oncology and Associate Professor, graduated from the Physician Executive Masters of Business Administration (MBA) program at the University of Tennessee on Friday, December 12, 2014. Dr. Gray was one of 51 graduates from over 26 states and 3 countries. The 2014 class was the largest Physician Executive MBA class since the inception of the program 17 years ago. Dr. Gray’s classmates nominated him as the class President at the start of the program and then unanimously nominated him for the Outstanding Physician Leader Award at the conclusion of the 12 month program. One classmate stated, “Dr. Gray has kept us going all year with his support, his motivation and most importantly his sincerity. We could have not have asked for a better class President and leader.” During this speech at the graduation ceremony, Dr. Gray acknowledged all who have helped him during his academic career and recited a passage from Robert Greenleaf’s Servant as Leader: “Most leaders rule with absolute power always reminding you that they are in charge, but great leaders are servants first. The greatest leaders will always look for ways to meet the needs of others.” He further recognized one of his mentors who “lent your influence and your affluence to someone in need, thank you Dr. Bell.” Dr. Gray was surrounded by his family and stated, “I kept my five children out of school for the graduation so that they could share and witness that in order to dream big, you must be willing to do hard things. Many have asked me what next? I am going back to work on Monday and do what I do, healing through serving those under my influence. I serve because I love my patients, I love my profession and I love my classmates.”
