Personal Interests:
Ryan Schmocker, MD, joined the University Surgical Oncology practice and Division of Surgical Oncology at the University Of Tennessee Graduate School Of Medicine, Department of Surgery, in September 2020. Schmocker completed his Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and graduated from General Surgery Residency at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he also completed a Master’s of Population Health. Though broadly trained in surgical oncology, Schmocker was recruited to grow the Surgical Oncology section of pancreas and hepatobiliary malignancies. He brings expertise in minimally invasive and robotic approaches to complex abdominal surgery. “I love that treating cancer is a team sport. As a surgical oncologist (cancer surgeon), I work closely with radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, nutritionists, and many other care providers. We work as a team to build camaraderie and give the patient a full spectrum of care they need,” says Schmocker. “The decision-making behind cancer care is often complex with many potential treatment options. Given the complexity, we work with each patient to determine their goals and preferences. The entire team then works formulate a treatment plan that incorporates what is important to the patient and characteristics of each patient’s cancer to determine the optimal overall treatment and surgical approach.”
