Am I a Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery?

To be eligible for weight loss surgery, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You are at least 18 years old
  • You have tried diet programs and have failed
  • You have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or more, or a BMI of 35 with other associated illness.

If you do qualify for bariatric surgery, you will undergo physical and emotional assessments, including visits with a psychologist and a surgeon, and undergo various tests to make sure you are an appropriate patient for weight loss surgery.

Types of Bariatric Surgery

We perform two types of weight-loss surgery, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass.

Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve

Also called a sleeve gastrectomy, the laparoscopic gastric sleeve is a restrictive bariatric surgery.

During this procedure, the surgeon creates a small, sleeve-shaped stomach. This stomach is larger than the pouch created during gastric bypass. Sleeve gastrectomy patients experience weight loss and resolution of their comorbid conditions that is similar to a gastric bypass.

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery

Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a minimally invasive bariatric surgical procedure.

Surgeons make smaller incisions, so there is less pain, faster recovery time and fewer complications than traditional surgery.

The surgeon sections off a portion of the stomach and re-routes part of the small intestine to empty the new, smaller section of the stomach. Typically, a patient returns home after two days in the hospital.
